RICHMOND,Va.—Right off of Interstate 95, lies MSDModern®, a travel destination for mid-century modern design collectors and history lovers. Located in Richmond, Va, the modern interior design shop features iconic and custom pieces of home décor including Saarinen office chairs, Nesso mushroom lamps, a six foot-long Herman Miller dining/conference table from his Aluminum Group and a lighting collection of blown glass pendants.
“Each piece in the space has a story,” says owner Micheal Sparks, “Mid-century modern is a lifestyle and a part of history.”
Mid-century modern design is a style originating in the 1930s. Designers and companies such as Charles Eames, Adrian Pearsall and Knoll influenced and led the furniture design industry. The design style has made its resurgence in 2007, partially due to the popular television show “Mad Men.” Mid-century modern dealers have sprung up all over the world, including fashion hubs such as Paris, San Francisco and New York City.
“For mid-century modern furniture, clients are across the board. We sell to the college student to the 90 year-old woman who lived during the mid-century modern era. There isn’t a common economical factor, education, gender or race. It’s a matter of taste,” says Sparks.
With large windows and an open floor plan, the shop and its supply of mid-century modern pieces are visible as commuters drive through Richmond’s historic architectural and industrial district. In addition, to being a showroom for mid-century modern décor, the space serves as a creative office for MSDModern’s parent company, marketing and design firm Micheal Sparks Design. With constant turnover of inventory, the store changes often, providing a source of creativity and inspiration for the staff.
