Michael Sparks, creative director and owner of Michael Sparks Design, has worked in New York, San Francisco, London, Paris, Madrid and Osaka, Japan.
His client list? Not too shabby. How about Halle Berry, Janet Jackson, Robert Redford, Barbra Streisand, Brad Pitt, and Oprah Winfrey, to name a few?
So why is he doing business at 205 Hull St. in Richmond’s Manchester district?
After years of 14-hour days jetting around the world, he explained, he wanted to ease his pace and return to the U.S. to be closer to family and friends.
He touched down for a while in New York but his partner, he said, is a doctor at VCU Medical Center, so for the past three years, Richmond has been the place, “and I haven’t missed New York for a minute.”
His shop offers branding, Web design and analytics, photo and video production, Internet marketing, social media consultation and interior design.
He continues to serve clients around the world, he said, and has added a robust slate of Richmond-area customers — restaurants, a museum, developers and other businesses. He said he makes a point of giving smaller businesses the kind of luxury multimedia presence that major corporations expect.
About a month ago Sparks opened a second element of the business in his 3,000-square-foot Hull Street space — MSDModern, a retail showroom featuring classic 1950s and 1960s furniture, a passion of his for decades.
“We had a larger place than we needed for the design shop,” he said. “It’s the prefect space to show off this beautiful furniture”
Michael Sparks designed the logo and branding for 525 at The Berry Burk.
